All About Love

Between the pandemic, protests and killer hornets, I've been thinking a lot about love and loveless, which reminded me of "All About Love" by bell hooks. It's one of my favourite books that I return to again and again. In it, she explains why, so much of the time, we find ourselves in such a loveless society. As it turns out, it has a lot to do with power.

She says part of the reason is we don't know how to love. Our families and schools can't teach us. Then, movies and popular culture further confuse us with their fairytale fantasies. We don't even have a working definition. We are left stumbling around in the dark as long as love is considered mysterious and elusive.

But Hooks reminds us and references Erich Fromm, who wrote that love is - the will to extend oneself to nurture one's or another's spiritual growth. Essential ingredients of love include care, affection, recognition, respect, commitment, trust, and honest communication. A concrete definition of love might be an excellent place to start.
